E2 (Energy + Environment) Study
Market Strategies’ E2 research program is designed to provide energy industry executives and managers with a knowledgeable “insider” perspective on issues at the intersection of Energy and the Environment. Beginning in 2007, eight survey waves have been completed to date, each consisting of approximately 1,000 online interviews with consumers nationwide.
One valuable product of this ongoing research is the “E2 Index,” which we use to track public opinion about the energy industry’s environmental stewardship, economic performance, and credibility. The index is calculated for the industry as a whole and for each component sector, such as electricity distribution or oil and gas production.
The ongoing research also offers insights on a range of specific E2 issues, including:
- Public attitudes on energy, the environment, and the economy
- Views of performance across various energy sectors
- Electricity generation preferences: present and future
- Energy efficiency and alternative energy attitudes and behaviors
- Awareness of and opinions about smart grid and smart meters
- Policy preferences - for example, for regulation of greenhouse gases
- Credible sources of information on the environment
At the beginning of 2010, Market Strategies developed the E2 Segmentation Framework, which identifies five distinct sub-groups in the US population that differ in how they think about and respond to the E2 issues. We believe this framework offers energy companies and others the opportunity to understand US consumers more precisely and work with them more effectively.
